Memory Verse of the Week

[Updated October 26, 2008]

Last year my five year old daughter and I memorized Bible verses together. Over the course of the year she memorized 52 verses…one per week. Below are all of the verses that she memorized last year in the order that we worked on them. To read more about what this page is about, refer to this post. A few years ago, my older daughter (who is 8 years old) also memorized these verses.

Over time, my daughters have forgotten the verses that we memorized earlier, so this year I am doing something different. I am going back through the same Bible I mentioned in this post, but this time I am doing it with both of my daughters. This has proven to be very effective. They both enjoy each other, but the competition of memorizing the verse perfectly has been an added bonus. They critique each other and have fun memorizing. Because they both have memorized the verses before, they typically have it nailed perfectly the second day…it’s just a refresher.

Earlier this week I was talking with them about why we are memorizing Bible verses. I was using an example from my own life about how Bible memory has helped me. I told them about a time when I was in college that I memorized the book of Philippians. Their eyes got wide, and Laurel asked how long that book is…then they asked me if I could tell them part of it. Uh…it’s been quite a while since I had looked at Philippians. I picked up Laurel’s Bible to get me started, then started quoting the second chapter of Philippians. I needed a little help, but mostly got through the first 18 verses and was able to tell them how those verses have helped me treat others better as well as how it has helped to give me proper perspective when I’m tempted to think more highly of myself than I should. That conversation got me to revisit Philippians and solidify my memorization of it.

  2. Thanks for the catch! The link pointed to the right chapter, but I didn’t modify the visible text. The second one should have been to Isaiah 1:18.
